Unlock the Gridlock

Looking at current modes and paths of transportation, housing development patterns, business/employment statistics, population demographics, and other elements of impact, students design and submit a report on regional gridlock and potential solutions or remediation of same.  Incorporating the “Big Six” approach to information problem-solving, students identify the problem, propose their resolutions, and provide supportive evidence for all.  Report will ultimately be delivered to or presented before a governmental agency responsible for oversight of transportation issues affecting the region.

Using Boolean Logic to Travel the World

Working in groups of 2-3, students plan a travel itinerary for a 7-day vacation and create a travel brochure utilizing a desktop publishing application.  Process is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of internet research with a particular focus on internet search engines utilizing Boolean parameters (AND, OR, NOT).  Grades 5-12.

Matthew Rowland, Henry Gordon

read2kids

Using pre-selected sites from the internet, students research the various methods and benefits of reading to young children.  They study the importance of reading to kids, selecting books, and various book resources.  Site also includes links to techniques, tips, and tricks to becoming a better reader.  Culminating project entails constructing and publishing a “Read Aloud Manual” as a guide for others who read to kids.

Enviroquest

Students explore a variety of environmental themes for five days while responding to a set series of daily tasks including phorum (forum) input, issue research, and topic-specific question-and-answer.  They are then called upon to select a single environmental issue upon which to focus their research.  At the close of their studies, students draft a written analysis (MLA formatted) on their selected issue suggesting solutions to address the problem.  Finally, they construct a 7- to 12-slide PowerPoint presentation summarizing their findings.  Grades 8-11.

Make It Beautiful

This project-learning-based WebQuest asks math (Pre-Algebra) students to use the concepts of area, volume and perimeter in designing a landscape for planter boxes that sit outside their classroom.  The web is used to research appropriate types of plants for the given environment, how much space different plants take up, and which plants will look good together.  Ultimately, the students will actually do the landscaping of the planter boxes.  A grading "rubric" is included, as well as a teacher page.

Andrew Goff and Christie Wheeler
Web Design

In this WebQuest, students take on the role of a web design firm who has been hired by the school to design websites.  In groups of three or four, students will investigate what makes a good instructional website.  Using this knowledge, groups then meet with "clients" (teachers and/or departments) to discuss the needs of the clients.  The groups ultimately build websites that will be linked to the main school website.  Evaluation notes and rubrics are available on the site.
