Hero

This unit happened as one of those teachable moments.  In early late August-early September we had just began a literature unit in Houghton Mifflin called Catastrophe's.  The literature unit is filled with stories of survival and heroes.  Marge Shasberger, Lori Jarvis, Phyllis Berry and I were teaching similar units with different grade levels.  We wanted to join together to try to develop a staff development workshop showing the value of the strategies we had learned.  We knew the strategies could be used with any age group and ability level and we were all teaching approximately the same unit.  So we decided to call our unit Heroes.  Then we were all touched by THAT DAY (9-11).  Like all teachers we faced classes of children asking questions.  We also faced assignments in our Masters classes.  What was concept attainment, concept mapping, and project based learning?  What did that have to do with technology and how could we seize "The Teachable Moment?"  Like many of you we sought some answers and the results of that quest follow in the unit we call Heroes.   The final version was reviewed by all and presented at National C.U.E. Final Heroes

Purpose

bulletWe began with discussions Tools and the Curriculum.  Were computers valuable, what was the value of online learning?  Could we justify the expense of the investment in technology?  Was technology just bells and whistles, smoke and mirrors?  We also learned about action research.  Could we through Action Research document the active learning taking place with the new tools and techniques?

bulletThis project was presented online and was reviewed by MaryAnn Pomerleau, Bruce McVicker and the IMET3 cohort.
bulletThis project is still in its original form.
bulletFuture follow-up in was continued throughout the next year and a half and culminated in the action research final showcase.

Peer Review:

Heather said, "Linda, The Hero movie is a great visual in exploring what a hero can be. The Ell student would have a good concept of hero without the need for oral language. This is a good introduction."

From the workshop, "The introduction was fantastic.  The multiple grade level examples gave us a clear idea of how to implement project based learning at different grade levels.  Well done."

The blending of the strategies was excellent and had a 'natural' flow to it.

This is a very polished and organized presentation. I had no problem going through the slides and no cumbersome problems either. Good intro with the "hero" gig.

Nice! The detail of this group's literature review...is that the expectation?

Faculty Review:

Once again, Linda, your sense of purpose and design flow wonderfully. This work is of the highest quality and the use of images without needing too much bandwidth to capture the visitor's attention is outstanding. Watching the surgeons, fireman, police, etc. is powerful. I couldn't find the enter button at first because my screen was too small. It might just be an issue with my machine. Once I noticed the scrollbar prompt, I found it without trouble. Wasn't sure if it was possible to move it up somewhere without messing up your great intro.

The integration of strategies and research is outstanding on this site. I also like the feedback form. Has anyone ever found it and given you feedback?

Good work.  Mike Menchaka

It is an exceptionally annotated bibliography; each group will have a different amount of resources, but the annotations follow a good model! Have you thought about using Inspiration to map out your site and perhaps aid in navigation? You have a lot of information here and you'll find there are many ways to make links--logical ones could be helped with a sitemap page. Not necessary for THIS PROJECT, I'm just thinking future modifications. Your project is outstanding; we are just talking about moving things to the next level for future projects! Great collaboration.

Phyllis, Marge, Linda and Lori, I'm about half-way through, but I'm extremely impressed. I've even seen this before. More impressive the second time. I really liked the way you've incorporated Open Court lessons into your new use of strategies. Very clever and creative. These synectic poems are utterly amzaing! I'm guessing the parents were pretty impressed too. BTW, these make great bulletin boards for Open House. It's obvious you've completely absorbed these strategies. You OWN them. Well done. Make sure you keep this transcript oo. It's for your feedback journal. I may not get to the discussion board tonight. I'm really into this site. These four Cubes certainly OWN these strategies! I'm impressed. The bar has been set! Yikes!
