Final Project-The Geo-Literacy Project  Crossing the Digital Divide to Learn;  Finding Your Place on the Planet

At the last minute fate gave me an opportunity to work with an exciting group of people.  I am proud and grateful for the opportunity to join a group of highly motivated and dedicated professionals.  While the project had been started in 1997 we worked and continue to work to develop a comprehensive and practical curriculum for anyone to use in their community.  What is so unique about this project is that it utilizes local resources and scaffolds technology into the learning.  The project is so unique it has now been recognized by The George Lucas Education Foundation, Intel, Apple, Sorenson Media, The University of Toronto, and many more.

Purpose

bulletThe purpose was to develop a comprehensive program to enhance learning by focusing on the intrinsic value of standards assigned at each grade level.  The product requires partnerships, community service, project based learning, immersive technology, multiple intelligences and more.  While sounding complicated we have streamlined the process to be implemented in any community.  As a result of overwhelming interest in the project we have formed a non-profit corporation and look forward to future development and refinement of a very useful program.

bulletThis project was presented at the National CUE convention in Sacramento
bulletThe National Educational Computing Consortium (ISTE) in Seattle and we have been invited back to present a second year in a row in New Orleans with the 2004 show.

The survey

bulletOf the forty one in attendance 81% responded to the survey.
bulletIn articles presented at  Partners in Stewardship the Project was recognized as demonstrating the best of educational technology practice and was compared to Seymour Papert's project based at Massachusetts Institute of Technology now running throughout Maine.
bullet"Students know more about technology than their teachers do so that is why we are finding that teachers are getting more disengage. We have to think how to design new learning environments so the kids know how to be a learner. We can see this in the Geo-literacy Project documentary, the Maine Laptop Initiative documentary, and in the Journey North (wild life migration) documentary."
