Inside Research Project Based Learning Literature Review George Lucas Education Foundation One of our favorites. Includes online resources and research for teachers and students. Grants and Projects are highlighted. Video interviews with experts. Links to some of the current experts are here. Videos of learners using Project Based Learning are also available on this site. Buck Institute for Education, Project Based Learning; http://www.bie.org/pbl/index.html ; 10/29/2001, Web Available A website devoted to Project Based Learning. Four articles discuss this teaching and learning model; Project Based Learning Overview, Project Based Learning Handbook, Project Based Learning Resources, and Project Based Learning Training. In their support of this teaching model, the Institute presents their findings of comparison observations between a more traditional learning setting and an experimental setting of Project Based Learning. It covers the author’s periods of observation in first the conventional classroom and then in the more experimental. He discusses the pros and cons of both of these teaching models. The website then goes on to present numerous tools and resources for the teacher wishing to embark on this new model. It outlines methods for using this instructional tool effectively to help teachers “…maximize the potential of Project Based Learning and avoid its pitfalls.” San Diego State University PBL This site is a webquest created to find Project Based Learning resources on the internet. It offers numerous links to learn more about Project Based Learning. Project Based Learning with Multi-Media SRI International's Center for Technology in Learning evaluated the Challenge 2000 Multimedia Project from 1995 to 2000. The evaluation examined three aspects of the Multimedia Project: its dissemination across various schools and districts, its impact on teaching practice, and its effects on student achievement. This page is designed to offer the evaluation findings to specific audiences: Technology Coordinators and Administrators, Teachers, Students and Parents, Business Partners, and Researchers. There are also Quick Links to the full evaluation reports, slide presentations, research and evaluation tools, and related research into education and technology.
This website offers books, sample Project Based Learning Projects, and much more. "'How can I get my students to think?' is a question asked by many faculty, regardless of their disciplines. Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional method that challenges students to "learn to learn," working cooperatively in groups to seek solutions to real world problems. These problems are used to engage students' curiosity and initiate learning the subject matter. PBL prepares students to think critically and analytically, and to find and use appropriate learning resources. The Educational Development Center This website offers international links to educators using Project Based Learning throughout the World.
The Global School House; Introduction to Project-Based Learning; http://gsh.lightspan.com/web/pbl/pblintro.htm 10/29/2001, Web Available Another website that explores the concept of Project-Based Learning and the dimensions that the Internet adds to this instructional tool. “There is nothing new about Project-Based Learning. Good teachers have always used projects as a supplement to their regular course of instruction.” This quote from the introduction leads to an exploration of just what multi-media has done to cause a resurgence of interest in the idea of PBL. It begins with an explanation of the strategy, a discussion of the model’s place in education reform, then proceeds with examples, testimonial stories from experienced educators, and PBL resources. It ends with the question “Why do project-based learning?” as it explores the benefits to student learning achieved by this learner-centered teaching model.
Thomas, Ph.D., John W.; A Review of Research on Project-Based Learning, The Autodesk Foundation, March, 2000 www.autodesk.com/foundation Web Available A review examining the research related to a teaching and learning model popularly referred to as “Project-Based Learning” (PBL). This document covers eight topics; A definition of PBL, PBL research and practice, research on the effectiveness of PBL, the role of the student in PBL, challenges in enacting PBL, research on improving the effectiveness of PBL, conclusions, and future directions for PBL research. |
