Brainstorming-Concept Mapping

Full Video Tapes Available

Activity 2: Subject(s): English Language Arts, Reading, Social Studies
Objective: The students will be able to find a way to answer their own questions by brainstorming what they want to know, writing down the questions, conducting an interview and writing about the responses.

Summary: During the 9/11/01 attacks on the World Trade Center, my students had questions about how the firemen and rescue workers felt. We decided to walk to our neighborhood fire station and interview the fire fighters about bravery.

IMPLEMENTATION

Learning Context: The Unit from Open Court Language Arts Program is called Being Brave. Through a series of stories and activities, the children develop an understanding of the concept 'Bravery'. We started with a
question and concept board about Being Brave and used this interviewing activity as a way the children could find answers to their own questions.

Procedure: Revisit the question and concept board Go back to questions about bravery and ask the students where they would go to find these answers. My class decided to walk to the local firehouse and ask firemen about being brave.  The teacher types the questionnaire.  The teacher makes arrangements to walk to the fire house.

Sample Student Products: After the interviews, the students will write what they learned about being brave from the firemen and post their reflections on the concept/question board. We can now move some of the questions to the concept side.

Collaboration: Students will work collaboratively & individually. Students will work in groups of 2.

Time Allotment: 3 class periods. 30 Min. per class.

Author's Comments & Reflections: This interviewing technique can be used to answer many question. This is project based learning.
