Draw a Hero

Activity 5: Working with the Art teacher Jeanne Weil we decided to come up with a project that could be placed on permanent display and used as covers for letters of support sent to some New York Fire Departments.  To begin we used the real life picture of the firemen raising the flag at the World Trade Centers site. We enlarged the photo and traced the outline of the firemen  and the flag with black marker on one large sheet of drawing paper.   We divided the larger picture into 2" by 3" inch squares and cut and numbered each square.  Based on the synectics activity each student was given a small square of the numbered drawing paper, 2" by 3".  They were asked to draw a small picture representing their synectics writing example.  All the pictures were pasted together to form a larger collage representing heroes from the more recent September 11th events.  Students did not know what the final picture would be.  They choose their own images on 2"x3" squares.  The final drawing is seen on the right.  When we presented the drawing the children were quite surprised to see the finished product.  Many went on to use the same technique in their own multi-media presentations.  Class work was published on the classroom website.
